The
climate of the Red Sea, Egypt, is easy to summarize. Throughout most of
the year, except for the winter months of December, January and
February, it is hot and dry. In the evenings during the winter months it
may be necessary to wear a sweater and long trousers, otherwise it is
'shorts and t-shirt' conditions all year around. Strong winds do exist,
which is very welcome during the summer months but can make the air
quite chilly during the winter.
Below, you 'll find the average climatic information for Hurghada,
located at about 27.30°N 33.79°E. Height about 3m above sea level.

Visibility and Temperature:
Seasonal water
temperature changes play a big part in determining visibility. Winter
tends to be the period of best visibility in Northern Red Sea areas as
the seas are too cool to support algae and planktonic growth.
Conversely, in the South, it is the summer which offers the best
visibility as the hot surface temperatures cause the sea temperatures to
become too hot to support the growth of marine micro organisms. No
matter where you dive in the Red Sea, blooms of planktonic growth can
crop up at any time reducing the visibility. Fortunately this is a rare
occurence and the normal visibility is excellent, ranging from 10-50+
metres.
Travel agents often promise water temperatures in the excess of 26°C,
which is true for most of the Red Sea during summer months. In fact,
during August, water temperatures often exceed 30°C. However, during the
winter in the north, temperatures often fall as low as 20°C, with a
chilly surface wind before and after the dive, making it seem even
colder. Therefore, at least a 5mm or 7mm wetsuit is advisable for diving
the Red Sea in winter months. It is even not uncommon to see a local
dive guide in a dry suit during this period. During the summer a 3mm
suit is usually adequate.
